Twitter Changes Its Name To X Corp In Move Towards Super App Status

One of the largest and most popular social media platforms on the planet, Twitter, has changed its name to X Corp.

Twitter owner and eccentric billionaire Elon Musk announced the name change in April 2023, and a legal filing confirmed the change. “Twitter Inc. has been merged into X Corp. and no longer exists,” the legal filing said. In addition, X Corp. is a privately held company incorporated in Nevada (previously Delaware), Twitter’s lawyers said.

Analysts believe that the renaming of the short-form social media platform is part of a plan to create a super app, an aim that Musk has made clear in recent years, even before he bought Twitter for a reported $43 billion.

A super app can be likened to a Swiss army knife - offering a range of component tools (mini apps) that the user can use and remove as needed to produce the ultimate in mobile functionality through a single interface.

According to Gartner, super apps are trending because users, especially the younger generation born in the age of smartphones, demand mobile-first experiences that are powerful and easy to use.

Speaking to the All-In podcast in 2022, Musk eluded to the his ambition to create a super app that would assist users with a number of everyday applications all rolled into one. "If you're in China, you kind of live on WeChat," Musk said.

"It does everything. It's sort of like Twitter, plus PayPal, plus a whole bunch of things all rolled into one, with a great interface. It's really an excellent app, and we don't have anything like that outside of China," said Musk.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BUSINESSES THAT WANT TO USE TWITTER?

Twitter continues to be a useful social media platform for businesses that want to keep up with the latest trends and conversations.

As a conversation platform that people enjoy using, Twitter can be great for gathering information and insights, whether that is on a particular product or how people feel about a certain topic.

It is essentially a massive focus group that can be tapped into when necessary to determine people’s attitudes towards various things, which can help to shape new products or the delivery of services. The Twitter Explore page gives users and businesses an updated list of topics and hashtags trending in their region and relevant to their interests.

Another useful element of Twitter for businesses is the ability to engage with an audience to establish brand personality and grow awareness of products and services.

This is possible because Twitter offers users the option to share information quickly and start conversations with their target audience. Businesses post on Twitter in the hope that their audience finds their Tweets and content valuable, and they decide to share it with their followers.

In addition, Twitter is often successfully used as a customer care tool that makes it easy for customers to reach out and contact the brand with any requests for assistance or to provide valuable feedback.

It is therefore important that any presence on Twitter is managed carefully and monitored to make the most of such interactions with customers and deliver great customer care.
